Howden Thomassen Compressors

Meilink active on site at Howden Thomassen Compressors for decades

If a Meilink client frequently exports large volumes and heavy capital goods, it can be more efficient to carry out our work for that specific client on site. Of course, that includes the work of our own packagers. Meilink has done this for Howden Thomassen Compressors in Rheden for decades. Meilink uses Howden Thomassen Compressors’ former expedition.

Howden Thomassen Compressors is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of piston compressors. With over a century of experience in compression solutions, Howden Thomassen Compressors supplies the major refineries and the oil and gas industry.

Hans Martens, Shop Manager at Howden Thomassen Compressors: “I am in charge of the work Meilink does in its internal expedition for Howden Thomassen Compressors, with a focus on the systematic and administrative aspects of the collaboration. We give Meilink the space to independently apply their expertise. Every day, we discuss the collaboration and the locations where the collaboration is to take place: the expedition area. What is important to us is that the Meilink’s own employees fully conform to our company rules and procedures, e.g. in the area of safety. And they do. At Howden Thomassen Compressors, we have a project in which each employee is expected to submit an idea for improvement every month, and we expect the Meilink employees to participate in that as well. I also consult with Meilink’s commercial director once a month. So I contact and consult with Meilink at multiple levels.”

Meilink Chain Solutions in practice

The transport containers, no matter how large, are designed entirely based on the principle of value engineering. That means that all packaging is optimally designed subject to functionality, following Howden Thomassen Compressors’ set of requirements.

All required containers are custom made by our colleagues at Meilink Borculo. That happens according to a tight chain schedule: Meilink Borculo makes sure the containers, meeting all required specifications, are on location in Rheden on time.

From production at Howden Thomassen Compressors, after being tested their piston compressors are sent to a special Howden Thomassen Compressors shipping hall at the company site in Rheden. Meilink has daily scheduling meetings to discuss this with Howden Thomassen Compressors. Here, the Meilink team with an average of eight employees packages these often very large and heavy compressors, including all accompanying parts. The separate parts are pre-packaged in containers made at Meilink Borculo, which are then stowed in a shipping container. Then the piston compressor parts follow. The Meilink employees clean these frames, apply a primer and use grease to preserve the blank parts of the piston compressors. They also protect the sharp parts, flange open pipes and tape the fragile parts. Depending on the storage duration and the final destination, parts are sealed, with added drying agents. Products with dimensions that fit in containers together, up to a total weight of 27 tonnes, are stowed in 40 Ft rebuild OT containers. For loads exceeding 27 tonnes, products are packaged in seaworthy containers and conventionally shipped via a flat rack or on a trailer. To give you an idea: the frames can run up to 50 tonnes, not including slide ways and cylinders. So, they’re gigantic. In that specific case, 12 containers are needed for each piston compressor to package everything. Luckily, Meilink’s shipping hall has an overhead crane with a mega capacity of 100 tonnes!

Not all stowed containers are directly transported. Meilink can store these at its company site under safe and dry conditions until they are requested by the client. That storage can go up to 100 containers, an enormous amount. It’s the Meilink Chain Solution Warehousing. On top of the Howden Thomassen Compressors hall, Meilink rents its own extra production hall. On the one hand, it serves as space for spillover work when more room is needed for Howden Thomassen Compressor packaging in the shipping hall or when the delivered containers have to be stored temporarily. Meilink also does work for other clients in this hall.

Once everything is packaged perfectly, Howden Thomassen Compressors Shipping takes over the transport, to deliver their products to customers all over the world. Meilink does ensure that the shipment meets all international transport requirements.
