Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill entrusts its vulnerable drilling equipment to Meilink packaging
Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill, part of Royal Eijkelkamp, manufactures sonic drilling equipment, which is mainly used in geotechnical drilling, mining and environmental exploration. The precious and sometimes fragile parts of their drilling equipment are shipped from the town of Giesbeek in Gelderland to all over the world, from Greenland and Eastern Siberia to the Angolan jungle.Bouke Willems is team leader Logistics at Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill in Giesbeek: “Meilink helps us achieve our logistical goals. By this, I mean making sure our products arrive at the customer’s premises on time and undamaged, and in representative packaging.”
Meilink has been the supplier of a wide range of packaging products for Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill for many years. The packaging, designed, produced and delivered by Meilink, is intended to pack fragile objects in the most efficient way and to transport them to their destination undamaged, however exotic and remote these destinations may be. For Royal Eijkelkamp, Meilink applies a number of Meilink Chain Solutions. Bouke Willems: “Some of the parts we ship are very heavy and may seem bulky, but at the same time, they are very fragile. For example, if even a sliver of metal comes off an engine shaft, it may no longer fit into a complex drill head. If for example, such a problem occurs in the middle of the jungle, where our customers are drilling, that’s a disaster. In those situations, it would be extremely expensive for us to have to make another delivery. That is why we want our parts to be perfectly packed and transported, without damage. Meilink can provide that know-how. Their professional packaging expertise helps us prevent transport damage. Meilink has a solution for everything. You can, for example, see really clearly that the crates have been closed and secured with screws. This prevents the receiving party from trying to prise the crate open with a crowbar, damaging the contents.”
From standard to special deliveries
Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill uses a wide range of Meilink packaging products, such as standard boxes for drill bits or elements of drill bits, and other spare parts such as drill heads. Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill also uses custom-made crates. Bouke Willems: “This is how we can properly pack fragile drilling components, such as the vibrators on the side of the drill head – highly sensitive parts that weighs 35 kg each. If you ship these in a regular crate, they are guaranteed to arrive with damage. We put our case to Meilink, and they came up with an innovative packaging with a foam interior to give the vulnerable parts extra protection. By adding the right interior to the crate, we were able to also add a spare parts box. Plus, this set-up allows the recipient to check, with a single glance, whether the shipment is complete. The crate itself also looks great and sleek, and is made of certified wood. This means that these crates pass through customs without any problems, even in very strict countries such as Australia and New Zealand.”Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill recently developed a new product. Bouke: “It is a probe tool that can be hung in our current sonic drills, a special combination. For this innovation, Meilink asked us lots of questions and details, so they were able to design and manufacture a dedicated packaging solution.”
Eijkelkamp also uses beautiful, narrow and long wrap boxes produced by Meilink. These can be up to 3.8 meters long and are used to box up expensive and specially developed samplers. The samplers are packed and transported in these wrap mailers. Bouke Willems: “The wrap mailers have a plywood end panel at both ends. If this packaging with its contents makes sudden sideways movements during transport, the plywood panels will absorb the blow to keep the contents safe and secure. The idea for these cardboard boxes, also originating from Meilink Chain Solution Design, is based on Meilink’s know-how, and again proves that cardboard can be as protective as wooden boxes or crates. The advantage of this type of packaging is that it is lighter in weight, which lowers transport costs.
Panotec boxes encourage repeat orders
Bouke Willems: “We didn’t know the Panotec and its endless possibilities, and we’re glad that Meilink pointed out what it can do. Customers also tell us that they appreciate the fact that our house style is so beautifully printed on the boxes. We have many resellers around the world selling our products, and they also appreciate the fact that our Panotec boxes look great on their shelves, especially as they often reuse these boxes. It is also useful to have the product sticker on the outside of the box. This makes it easier for customers to re-order the product, without having to browse through the catalogue first. The Panotec boxes with their slick printing, beautiful appearance and product sticker encourage repeat orders!”
The choice for cardboard
Finally, Bouke Willems explains why they decided on cardboard as a packaging material: “With our heavy and fragile products, you would automatically assume wood is the best packaging material. But Meilink has proven that cardboard, as a packaging material, also meets all our requirements.”
Meilink Chain Solutions in practice
Input from the shop floor. All packaging products, such as these crates with a foam interior, start with a design from Meilink Chain Solution Design. Meilink asks detailed questions when Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill needs a new packaging solution. Meilink’s specialists, where necessary with the support of the industrial designers of Meilink Chain Solution Design, will visit the Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill shop floor, to see and discuss how and where the new packaging will actually be used. Bouke: “Not only does Meilink Chain Solution Designguarantee the safety and protection of the packaging used for Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill. Meilink also ensures that the packaging are representative, and that the unique style of Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill is reflected as an extension of our corporate identity via the packaging.
Smart use of the Panotec machine. Eijkelkamp uses SonicSampDrill boxes manufactured by Meilink on its Panotec machine in Boxmeer. This unique machine produces tailor-made boxes on demand for Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill. Bouke Willems: “Meilink has a supply of endless cardboard with our logo. Based on a digital order, they can fold the right number of boxes and deliver them to us. This system is particularly suitable for producing product-specific boxes on demand, very quickly, in the form desired and in small quantities. This enables us to pack and send each drill bit in the right size box. This can be seen as a tangible form of Meilink Chain Solution Optimalization. Bouke Willems: “The Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill logo is printed on these boxes in such a way that it can always be seen correctly, whatever way you look at the box. Smart thinking on the side of Meilink.”
Everything produced in-house. All packaging designed by Meilink and approved by Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill is manufactured at Meilink Borculo. This results in a seamless match between design and implementation on the one hand and the logistic processes at Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill on the other. If more stock is required quickly, Meilink can produce it as a matter of urgency.Bouke Willems: “If our inventory drops below a minimum level for any packaging product, an order is automatically sent to Meilink.” Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill receives the packaging from Meilink and packs the objects itself, and also straps the packaging. In order to ensure optimum efficiency, on the advice of Meilink and after a successful test, Eijkelkamp purchased a battery-operated strap-wrap machine, and the company is very satisfied with the results. The machine enables Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill to carry out its packaging work efficiently and safely, down to the last detail. Another division of Royal Eijkelkamp, Eijkelkamp Soil & Water, also buys a range of packaging aids from Meilink.
Self-packing through smart simplicity. Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill can pack the products itself on site, because Meilink does not design and manufacture complex packaging which require the deployment of packers from Meilink. It is because of this smart simplicity that the staff at Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill can pack almost anything themselves. Of course, Meilink can also carry out packing activities for clients, which it does under the name Meilink Chain Solution Packing.
Cardboard in stock. Meilink and Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill have made clear agreements about the boxes produced on demand by the Panotec, such as the purchase of the endless cardboard required. Meilink keeps this in stock until the ‘on demand’ production starts. In short, a good example of Meilink Chain Solution Warehousing.
